10-12-05 Oct Walleye GPS Hot Spots
We got an early start leaving Minot with 43 degree temps. By the time we arrived at the lake it was 30, ice and heavy fog. BURR! We idled out and finally the fog broke long enough for us to make a run to Shell Village. Nothing for us there so we moved south. Within minutes we had a 6.9 followed by a 5.1on deep diving Reef Runners in 28 feet. Fall fishing is fantastic and big fish are the norm. Water temps are 54 on the main lake and Parshall bay down to 51. Ducks and geese are on the move. It's great to be on the water.  October Walleye.jpg (67929 bytes) Fall Fishing on Sakakawea

Key in on sections of the lake where the river channel runs to shore and swings back out. The river from Skunk on up is good and will get better as fall hits. New Town area is a good starting place.
10-5-05 Minot GPS Hot Spots
Big winds with big snow. It just dumped 12-15 inches of heavy wet snow. Today is calm and predictions call for 60's by the weekend. We needed this cold to turn over the lake. Conditions were way too warm for this time of the year. Fall fishing should be going great guns by the weekend or early next week. We have been getting a whooper every other trip out and it should only improve with the cooling temps. Oct 5.jpg (113696 bytes) Central ND got dumped on!
10/01/05 Jeff 's fall fishing 8.2 big fish GPS Hot Spots

Wind was 15 + out of the SE and 50's for an overnight low. Water temp is way up at 64. It has been hot these last 3 days. Big Reef Runners in Firetiger pulled at 2 mph got us off to a great start with our first fish at 8:01 weighing in at 8.2. At 8:33 we checked in one more tipping the scales at 5.2. Things slowed on big fish be we did get several nice 3-4 pound fish and at 11:40 we had the opportunity to weigh another fall walleye. 6.9 pounds.  We caught fish all day. Released all the big wallyes + 4 nice northerns. Two best colors: Firetiger and Mud Minnow.
Big three average- 6.7 pounds!!!
Jeff released all his big fish!

Way to go!

9/30/05   GPS Hot Spots
Wind out of the NW at 20 with overnight lows in the 50's. This cant be fall. Water temps up a degree today as a result of very warm weather. If I was betting I would have put all my money on today. Perfect weather and wind. Good thing I didn't as I would have lost it all. Fishing was very slow for us. We only put 3 walleyes in the boat and let 3 northern go back. I just didn't get it put together today.  One of the other boats did fine on leadcore. We pulled fire line and big Reef Runners. Maybe tomorrow will be back to fishing as usual.  UA last day.jpg (66094 bytes) Fall Transition

5.9-7.6-4.9-5.2 Plus several 4's
Fall fishing is in full swing. Big walleyes go on the bite this time every year and this season looks to be no exception.  Reef Runners today in 25 feet put a bunch of great fish into the livewell. Firetiger set at 75-80 feet back were the ticket today.  I kept the speed set around 2mph and fish were absolutely explosive. Wind was out of the NW at 20-25 with water temps up a little to 61. Day time high was low 80's - a bit warm for me in late Sept. We kept 12 and released several great fish.

9/28/05 Rich with Pump House Walleye GPS Hot Spots
Rich with a very nice Pump House Walleye caught in 15 ft.  About this time every year water is pumped from Audubon into Lake Sakakawea. The fish move up into the current and make for some great days on the water. Today started out on the cold side. Down into the 30's for an overnight low with daytime temps only getting to the 50"s.  Wind was a solid 15 out of the NW and water temps 58-59 degrees.  We got started at about 2:30 and managed to jig up 7 nice walleyes.  Vertical, pitching or dragging it all worked. 9/18/05 Joe & Jenna GPS Hot Spots
Jenna did a number on walleyes with four in a row. Not bad for a girl who has never caught a walleye before! Way to go Jenna. Cool, damp and foggy is the best way to describe the last two days. Today we headed to the pumping station and picked up 9 good walleyes on jigs and minnows before heading out to pull cranks. The pumping station is going great guns and we watched a shore fisherman pick up several nice walleyes. Water temp is still dropping fast, down to 62 this morning. Fish have moved up shallow and we finished out the day in Steinke Bay pulling 400 series Reef Runners. Water back in Steinke is a full two degrees cooler than the main lake and has been that way for a week now. There is lots of bait in the deeper water at depths of 12-13 feet.  Northerns have moved shallow as well. We are into the fall bite! Joe & Jenna.jpg (78668 bytes) Steinke Bay
Embankment Pumping Station
9/15/05 Fall Walleye 7.9 lbs GPS Hot Spots
The water is being pumped over into Sakakawea and the embankment pumping station is getting hot. We have been picking up fish on both jigs and minnows or half a crawler or bouncers and crawlers. Good current is pushing out to the first point so drifting is a good option and then electric back to the start. You can also drag jigs or do a vertical presentation, both are working about as well.
Good Luck,
Greg

9/14/05 Sept Northern GPS Hot Spots
We have been out fishing all week since this past Sunday. Fish are making the fall transition a couple of weeks early. We are catching walleyes in 8-12 feet and also finding fish still in the 25+ depths. Northern have moved shallow and will start going in the next week or two. Salmon are also on the bite. I am hearing of lots of limits caught from shore in the Pick City area. Water temps are going down fast.  The main lake is 66 and dropping. Cold nights and cool days are bringing in fall fishing.
Good Luck,

9/8/05 Jesse's September Double GPS Hot Spots
We turned right at Garrison Bay and went looking around today. I marked some decent fish east of Douglas but didn't put the catch on them. We did manage to sink the hooks into a line busting hard fighting Salmon. Later in the day we moved back to the east end where I have been doing most of my fishing for the last month or so. Same old story, lead in 23-25 with Rip Shads got us some eaters. I spent plenty of time re-learning why you don't force the fish in with lead core.
Reason 1:Lead core tangles are a nightmare!
Reason 2: Lost 4 nice fish by reeling in to fast.

Fishing Tip

I try to mention in the reports that if you don't find fish this time of year to keep moving because the fish are always moving. Today was an example, I caught 3 fish on a pull around a hump and marked several. Next trip around in less than 10 minutes, not one mark and not one fish. Keep searching and you will intercept them.

9/4/05 Sarah's keeper GPS Hot Spots
We got off to a late start. It's nice to sleep in sometimes. Light winds with sun this morning and overcast with 10 mph out of the NW this afternoon. We started at FT Stevenson point in 28 feet. Not a single bite. Moved to 7 Sisters and pulled 23-25 feet on lead. We picked up 6 and got bite off by a Northern. Later we moved over to the front of Centennial and picked up the rest of our limits. Blue Chrome this morning and Wonderbread Red this afternoon.  Rip Shads in both sizes. Lots of small fish are still being caught.
Good Luck,
Greg
Sarah's keeper.jpg (67353 bytes) Fished 7 Sisters but had to move around to get a couple of limits. Finished out over at the front of Centennial.
9/2/05 Guibber with fall Salmon GPS Hot Spots
We got an early start with lines in the water by 7:30 am. Within an hour we had our limit of walleyes- 10-12 inches. Boy is next season going to be good. All of the fish came one at a time and a different location for each bite. Fish were scattered and often are in this late summer pattern. I keep moving and looking, playing a game of interception as opposed to waiting them out. When we were 3 fish short on walleyes a nice salmon grabbed on for a rod shaking fight. Later we picked up our last 3 walleyes and headed in with 10 walleyes and 1 Salmon. Most fish came on 400 series Rip Shads in 25 feet of water. Water temp is down to 66 with wind out of the SE this morning at 10. Later we hit 25 on wind speed.
Good Luck,
Greg

8/29/05 Rick with a great walleye released! GPS Hot Spots
We started at Centennial and fished in 23 with lead. After an hour or so we moved down into 26 feet and began catching fish. Later in the day I put on 400 series Rip Shads and didn't catch squat so we went back to smaller lures and presto- fish. Fishing is almost back to normal after a nasty week of wind. Water is 68 and today wind was East at 5-10 mph. No predominate color or depth today. The water has cleared up significantly but it took 3 days to do it. Two limits of very nice fish today with a bonus fish released, thanks to Rick.  Rick's catch & release.jpg (71727 bytes) East End Humps.

8/28/05 Johnny's Sakakawea keeper GPS Hot Spots
Fishing picked up from yesterday but not by much. Fish were glued to the bottom and I didn't mark diddly for most of the day. We caught some in 23 feet and then late in the day dropped down to 26 and found better fishing. It is tuff fishing without hooks on the sonar. We are still feeling the effects of the wind from the middle of the week. It has these fish face down in the mud! Water is back to 68 with light winds out of the SW at 10.  We put 9 in the box and called it good. Rip Shads with no predominate color. Johnny's keeper.jpg (62505 bytes) We fished the East End all day back and forth on the humps. I spent most of the day trying to mark fish stuck in the mud.
8/27/05 Happy campers GPS Hot Spots
In at 3:30 and back out at 4:30. We went out to Ft Stevenson point and started pulling deep divers in 25 feet heading east. Fishing was slow but we picked up fish all the way down to Centennial where we stopped and  headed in. Deep diving Reef Runners in Flame caught most of the fish. We picked up one Salmon crossing some deep water.  Wind had died down and was blowing around 10-15 from the NW.  Dr Williams.jpg (69402 bytes) East of Garrison Bay all the way to the embankment.
8/27/05 Levi    27 3/4 inches GPS Hot Spots
Wind was the only word to describe this week. It started blowing on Wednesday and didn't get over until tomorrow. Today wasn't bad but we had two days of 30 + winds. Water was down to 67 and dirty.  Fishing was off for us but we did manage to put some nice fish in the boat including this 27 3/4 inch walleye. Levi who is 8 was very pleased. Leadcore got all our fish today with depths ranging from 17 to 23 feet. Rip Shads worked best but no one color was better than another. We went in around 3 and I headed back out at 4:30. Mornings total was 7 walleyes.  Dobber.jpg (86847 bytes) We fished Centennial area and moved all day looking for fish.
8/15/05 Johnny's leadcore walleye GPS Hot Spots
One more day of exactly 67.9 water temps on the East End of Lake Sakakawea. Winds today were out of the east at 15-20. It was rough going out this morning but it settled down by 10 am. We reeled in a limit early on leadcore,  and went looking around the lake. Lots of Salmon fishermen over by Government Bay in the channel. We had the face of the dam to ourselves for Smallmouth, which were not biting on jigs and plastic. I should learn something about those bass as we have lots of them and they fight like a couple of mad professional wrestlers.
Good Luck,
Greg
Johnny's walleye.jpg (82839 bytes) I have been going out of Garrison Bay and it dosent matter which way you turn you will run into fish. Douglas has been good and so has Centennial area.
8/14/05 Binky's Bunch  GPS Hot Spots
I was wrong about yesterdays prediction. Fish were not jumping in our boat. Maybe others were putting the hammer on them but we worked hard for 6 good walleyes. Water temps took a nose dive and have not recovered as I expected. 67.9 again this morning, exactly the same as yesterday. We did get up to 75 today and with the 20mph wind from the SW it should warm things up a bit. All of our fish came on wonderbread red Rip Shads.
Good Luck,
Greg

I didn't get out until just before noon. It was in the low 50's last night and blew hard all day yesterday. Water temp took a hit with Garrison Bay water temps at noon only getting to 67.9 High in the 60's today with NW winds at 10-15. Burrrrr! I pulled lead for a couple of hours and caught 2 skipjacks and 2 10 inch walleyes. The reason you don't see a picture at the right is I dint catch anything. Bummer. Bad Day. I will be out tomorrow and if I am right fish will be back into the swing of things even with the colder water.

We took the kids fishing today for the ND Wildlife Federation. What a blast. We launch out of Ft  Stevenson with boats loaded with a couple of hopeful future anglers and come back in for lunch and back out in the afternoon with a new pair. It is a blast. Many of these kids are experiencing a boat ride for the first time and joy is all over them. The brutal cold front is upon us and it is in the 60's again today. Wind is NW at 20-25! The fishing this morning was great and the girls picked up 5 good walleyes in an hour and a half. We came back out after lunch and it was over. One keeper for the late shift. What a difference a half of day can make. If you would like to volunteer for next years adventure fire me off an e-mail and I will get you on the mailing list.

What is my nose doing running like it is late fall. A brutal cold front is coming down from Canada eh. Highs today in the 60's and clouds with NW winds around 10-15. We picked them off one at a time all day with Rip Shads. No really great color but Blue/Chrome is still out producing other colors.  We had 3 limits by 2:30 and picked up a couple more for my supper. We got in just in time for a little rain shower. Most of the fish today were in the 17 inch range. Still pulling lead but we started with fireline and picked up a few before making the switch.

Joe and I got out late afternoon and headed to the humps south of Centennial. We put down leadcore with Rip Shads into 20-25 feet and in a couple of hours had a couple of limits. These walleyes are in such great shape this year.  Fat, chunky and heavy make for some mighty tasty fillets. Water is still at 71.5. Today was cloudy with a NW wind at 15. Blue/Chrome was the best color followed by Blue/Prism.

Light winds of 10 or less with water at 71.6 again. Moderate temps in the high 70's low 80's. It took all of an hour and a half to put two limits in the boat from the east end. We went looking out west around Douglas but no luck in the deeper water at 30 feet. We came back to the east end and picked up another limit and played catch and release for much of the afternoon. Leadcore in 23 feet. Blue was the color of the day. A couple of groups were out today and some hawg walleyes were brought in. I got a picture of 5, the biggest was 6.15 and the smallest was 4.3. Sakakawea is cooking!!!

SE winds 10-15 this morning and up to 25 this afternoon. Water temp is 71.6. Marked lots of fish in the 18-25 range with some better marks down to 30+. We pulled lead on Rip Shads with Bubblegum fast becoming my new favorite color. The girls were great and hauled in 5 keepers plus schools of small fish. SW winds at 10 and water temp this morning on the east end is 70.1 Dobber and I drove east to the Centennial humps and got into fish right away. Lead 100 feet back at 2 mph in 20-23 feet got us a couple of limits of very nice walleyes in the 18-20 inch range. Lots of small fish biting and the usual skip jacks.  By 3 we were headed in and got flagged down by a boat in distress. They were changing the prop and dropped the brass spacer in the drink. Sounds like something I would do. We gave them a tow into Wolf Creek and headed to the ramp at Ft Stevenson pleased to have had another day on the water.

8/04/05 Darrell's ND Northern GPS Hot Spots
8AM and dead batteries so back to square one for an hour of coffee while getting the starting battery up to snuff. We launched out of Garrison Bay and went west to Douglas along the north shore. Fish were easy to mark in depths from 16 to 25 feet. Water temps are down to 68 which is a big drop from 74 a few days ago at Indian Hills. A cold front blew through along with overnight lows in the 50's. Small fish all day long. We fished in depths from 25 to 12 and caught walleyes at every depth but only hooked a pair of keepers. Right at the mouth of Douglas next to the  islands we hooked into a great ND Northern and the battle was on. It's fun to get these big fish on line counters as you can measure the runs in feet. These big fish can make some pretty impressive line stripping runs.
Good Luck,

The perfect fishing day. Moderate south winds, water temp at 75 and air temps predicted into the 90's. We had overcast skies most of the day which kept the heat down. We stopped just west of Indian Hills in 20 feet and started pulling cranks. Our first fish which weighed in at 4.8 came just minutes into the pull. Fishing remained steady all day.  Two deep diver Reef Runners and two Deep Little Rippers. Texas Red was the color of the day. We only got two fish on different colors.

We took off from the Garrison ramp just a little after 7am in the fog. What are the chances of fog in ND? (SLIM)  We fished just west of the mouth of Garrison Bay and caught a few small fish and a couple of keepers in 20 feet on lead. After the fog lifted a bit we went east to the humps around Centennial and Clayton and his wife Debbie both  dropped the hammer on two nice walleyes. We managed to land about 25 skip jack in the days fishing. Most fish came in 20-23 feet on lead using Rip Shads at 2 mph. Water is 71. 5  with light winds from the west and 95 + degrees.

We picked up a couple of fish off the humps at the mouth of Centennial and later in the day blasted off for Deepwater from Garrison Bay. Just a little over 50 miles one way! A great day for a ride as we had zero wind and it was in the high 90's. We pulled Reef Runners North of  Deepwater Bay in the 23-25 foot range. Not seeing as many fish on the electronics as a couple of days ago. With the 2 this morning and 8 this afternoon we managed a couple of limits on good walleyes. Big fish were 4 lbs with most around 17-19 inches.  Walleye.jpg (23756 bytes) Fish are both ways from Deepwater Bay. Wind was suppose to blow in the 30's this afternoon but the weather man got it mixed up with this morning. We had pretty stiff winds of 25+ until later this afternoon when it calmed to 15-20. We saw a ton of small fish caught on bait north of Deepwater Bay on the flats all the way down to Lucky Mound. We pulled lead again today and took two limits home. We pulled lead in 23 feet for a couple of  very quick limits and then switched to deep diving Reef Runners for bigger fish out a little deeper. Rip Shads in Texas Red or Mud Minnow were HOT! Same for the bigger lures pulled on fireline in 25 +. We put some nice fish back that were caught on the big plugs and added another limit of great fish to the livewell. Dennis and I got to Deepwater today for the first time this season. Fishing has been great here for a couple of weeks and we decided it was time for us to check it out. We pulled fireline and Reef Runners for a while and then switched to lead with Rip Shad Reef Runners. We put in some eaters and went looking around. Over at Chimney we trolled Deep Diver Reef Runners and got a couple of very respectable walleyes. Water temp is just over 71 and winds have been light out of the SE.  It is that time of year when you can easily mark fish so believe what your electronics are telling you. 7/20/05 Sarah battling a 15 pounder GPS Hot Spots
It was family day out and what a perfect day. Sarah and I got to the lake at 7:30 am and the rest of the family followed at noon for a picnic lunch on the lake.  Water temp is 72-73  with light winds. We marked fish and caught little walleyes but nothing of any size. I pulled every crank I have in all 40+ colors and simply could not get any interest. On the plus side 100 yards from Centennial ramp we hooked into a heavy fish and 6 year old Sarah had an arm aching fight on her hands. I managed to get all the lines in before they tangled from the turbo boost runs of the northern. Under the boat at least 8 times, back up and out of the water and still had a few get away tricks left. Sarah did a great job combined with a light drag and we had a picture fish on our hands.

The day after weather can go either way. Good or bad. Today was decent but down from some of the great fishing we have been having. Water temps are bottom 70's on the east end. We fished in back bays this morning  and picked up a few including the one pictured tothe right. Late morning we moved out to the sunken humps around the east end. Fished mostly in 18-20 feet and picked up a few but nothing great. Some on Reef Runners and some on Bombers. This afternoon we moved back into Centennial bay and caught our best fish 300 yards south of the boat ramp.  Days Total: Two limits cleaned and one put back including a couple of 4's

Reef Runners in 9-11 feet, with Firetiger being the best color.  Trolled slow at 1.8 this morning and speeded up to 3 this afternoon. We had a chance to try out the new 400 series Reef Runner. WOW!

Jon and I got on the water around 8:30 at the Parshall ramp. We headed south to the east shore on the N side of Shell. All I can say is fishing sure is fun. We put 10 in the boat with crankbaits and then went looking for catch & release big fish. Big Reef Runners got us some pretty respectable walleyes  with  one over 6. Later in the day we went back shallow and hauled in and released about 30 fish. Lake Sakakawea is hot this summer.

After 100 plus temps yesterday an overnight low of 70 was welcome. The wind switched to the NW and cooled things down a bit including the fishing. We put 10 very nice fish in the boat by 11 on cranks in 18 ft. We came in, cleaned fish, and back out at 1 with Kim from the Minot Daily. We hoped to show Kim some great fishing but what a contrast. 2 keepers all afternoon. I marked more fish than I could believe and caught fewer fish than I thought possible. What a difference  a few hours can make in fishing.

We left the dock at 7:30 and went west to the Buffalo humps. Pulled Reef Runners in 18 feet and had a ball. The quality of these fish is unbelievable. What a summer it has been. 15 walleyes and lots of smiles means a great day by anyone's standard. We had more wind from the SE and I say bring it on! It keeps the bite hot. Another warm one with high 90's and water in the low 70's. Cranks in 20 feet did the trick again. There are few things I like better than pulling Reef Runners for walleyes. Fish are in great shape and a normal limit has some 3's and 4's in it.   All Smiles.jpg (95594 bytes) Indian Hills!

HOT and I mean into the 90's but it helps the fishing and on the water it is still very comfortable. We fished the east end today in 10 feet for 9 really nice keepers. It was good fishing but a little slow and we worked hard for our fish. Reef Runner Rip Shad in Firetiger is the only lure I could get fish on.  A great pair of Keepers.jpg (67726 bytes) Garrsion ND

Sakakawea Double GPS Hot Spots
I normally give the National Weather Service good marks on predicting the wind speed and direction. This year they are getting a C-. However they still do a great service and I never go fishing without listening to the  lake report. Winds out of the NW at a full 30 made for tuff boat control. Fishing on the other hand was absolutely great. We had 6 in about as many minutes and then had to pretend we were fishing and work a little for the next 15 or so. Today's best was a 6.1 followed by a 5.4  and many 3 lb plus fish. RS-4's in firetiger fished from 4 to 9 feet. Water temp is coming back to 67-68. We have had cool nights and days so the lake is slow in warming.

National Weather Service predicted S-SW winds 10 to 15 and sure enough we had the sum of the two. 25 mph and steady. The longer it blew the better the fishing got. We started shallow with cranks but it was slow. Water was down right cold. 64-65  degrees. The last time I was at Van Hook it was 70 +.  Wind and rain have played havoc with the water. It was very stained. Due to cold temps I opted to go deeper and we fished 23 feet most of the day. We put 10 good eaters in the boat and released 5 awesome fish. 7.9 was the days best. Windy and then some. It has been blowing for 2 days out of the NW. We got on the water and before we were out of Garrison Bay the water temp had dropped from a 64 degree high two days ago to an astounding low of 54! Every so often the wind blows the top warm water out of the bays and leaves the cold water behind. If you watch temps you will notice this after a strong wind. Best thing to do is head for the other side of the lake. We did and the temps were 60 to 61, that's 6 & 7 degrees difference. Fish don't bite when their water temps change that much.  We put two great walleyes in the boat and two very large salmon. Cranks in 10-12 on the east end.

Drifting leaches on sunken humps and pulling cranks shallow put some really nice fish in the livewell. The day turned out to be very pleasant with moderate winds from the east. Just enought time to located a great school of incredibly aggressive walleyes. I picked up the guys at 7:30 and by 8:29 they had 10 super walleyes and released many others. We went looking for other fish and moved around all day. Whenever we got into 6-10 feet of water we found fish. The North East corner of shell was unbelievable. You literally could not eat a sandwich due to the interruptions. . Several times we had two or more on at a time. You gotta love this sport!
